Japanese New Year’s Decoration: Shimenawa Workshop - Parents Experience (Nov. 16)

What is Shimenawa?
Shimenawa (しめ縄) are traditional Japanese sacred ropes, usually made from twisted rice straw. They have deep roots in Shinto traditions and are used to mark sacred spaces, distinguish them from the ordinary world, and ward off impurity.

During the New Year season, special shimenawa decorations are displayed at homes and businesses to welcome Toshigami, the deity associated with the New Year, and invite good fortune for the year ahead.

What to expect:

In this hands-on workshop, we will learn to make a traditional Japanese New Year’s shimenawa decoration, starting from scratch by twisting the rice straw by hand. We’ll use freshly harvested green rice straw specifically prepared for New Year’s decorations.

This year, we will create an original decoration in the shape of the zodiac animal for the coming year: the Fire Horse (Hinoeuma, 丙午).

Our instructor will guide us through each step with care, making sure everyone can complete their own decoration within the workshop.

Using the whole body to twist and weave the straw, experience the joy of this traditional craft and prepare to welcome the New Year with a fresh and peaceful spirit.

We warmly look forward to welcoming you!
