Cooking Japanese Bento - Family Experience (Feb. 28)
In this Family Experience, we will go through what makes a Japanese Bento special!
Japanese lunch boxes, or “O-bento”, are hand-crafted meals that balance flavour, nutrition, seasonality, and visual beauty. More than just food, bento culture reflects everyday Japanese life, creativity, and care for others.
Together, families will visit a local kitchen space where a Japanese home-style cooking instructor will introduce the fundamentals of bento-making, from ingredient selection and preparation to traditional presentation techniques. Participants will learn how colours, shapes, and textures are thoughtfully combined to create a well-balanced meal that is both delicious and aesthetically pleasing.
During this hands-on session, both children and adults will prepare several classic bento dishes using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Families will assemble their own bento boxes, learning simple techniques they can recreate at home. The experience encourages creativity, teamwork, and cultural discovery in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
After completing the bento boxes, families will sit down together to enjoy the meal they have prepared, sharing stories and insights into Japanese food culture. Participants will also gain a deeper understanding of bento etiquette and how bento plays a role in school lunches, work life, and special occasions in Japan.
This experience is designed to be interactive, educational, and fun for all ages—offering families a meaningful way to connect with Japanese culture through food.
*If the weather permits, families will be able to enjoy their bento lunch in the middle of the serene and beautiful nature of Kamakura.
