Roots Culture Family Experience (Mar. 14th & 15th)
Roots Culture Family Experience
Come with us to an artist studio and learn the crafts, geography, culture and history of Kamakura first-hand! Here you will see how traditional and contemporary blend together through maps, bread-making and various crafts. We will do four family workshops at NOWHERE / Imakoko-Shoten. You can join just the first or the full series!
Roots Culture is a Kamakura-based cultural collective that cultivates contemporary culture deeply rooted in place—its history, landscape, and everyday life—while remaining open to the wider world. The name reflects their core idea: culture should grow from its roots, rather than be imported or separated from daily experience.
Their work is quiet, thoughtful, and human-scale, often taking place in temples, nature, and local spaces, and it aligns closely with Kamakura’s slower, reflective rhythm, rather than commercial or fast-paced driven culture.
What to Expect From Each Session:
Visit an authentic Japanese house-turned-artist studio
Meet local craftsmen who share the history, nature facts, and crafts of Kamakura
A hands-on experience on both traditional and contemporary Japanese crafts
Includes water and a light meal
Sessions Breakdown:
First Session: Jan. 25, Introduction to the studio and traditional crafts. You can also learn the inner-working of an oven.
Second Session: Feb. 21, Craft some puppets, cut bamboos to build a Japanese Omikoshi for the March session festivals.
Third Session: Mar. 14, Discover the nature and history of Kamakura through Japanese crafts.
Fourth Session: Mar. 15, A festival to share knowledge, exhibit the works, and close the workshop series. Bake your own pizza, or get one by exchanging the “money tickets” you can print throughout the workshop.
