About Casa Maria do Forno
Casa Maria do Forno has been in the same family lineage for over 400 years and holds a story as unique as the place itself. It all began with a couple who lived here long ago and were known in the village for baking bread in a large oven with chimneys said to resemble those of the Royal Palace in Sintra.
One cold morning, a newborn baby was found abandoned at their doorstep. Having just baked bread, the couple placed the wicker basket near the warm oven to help keep the child alive. By miracle, the baby survived. They named her Maria do Forno —Maria "of the Oven" —in honor of the home that saved her.
Maria later married a cattle trader passing through Sintra, a union from which the family lineage of this home was born, and remains so until today!
