From the Tagus to the Tile: A Bioceramic Experience with Oysters & Wine (Oct. 28 & Nov. 6: Two-Part Experience)
Join us for a unique, sensory dive into design, sustainability, local culture, and a touch of ocean-fuelled creativity!
Two surfer–architects, recently exhibited at Lisbon’s Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, will take you behind the scenes of their experimental project: turning oyster shells and seaweed from the River Tagus into stunning, Portuguese-inspired azulejos — tiles made entirely from the ocean’s own materials.
Across two sessions, you’ll experience the full creative journey: from tasting the oysters that start it all, to crafting and finishing your very own handmade tile to take home. Along the way, you’ll explore how local traditions, ecological thinking, and a good dose of salty curiosity come together in a playful, meaningful celebration of coastal culture.
This 2-part experience is set on a private property with stunning views over the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and ocean.
What to Expect
Session 1 : From Oyster to Material (28th Oct.)
We’ll start by tasting the region’s famous oysters — the same ones served in Lisbon’s top restaurants — paired with local wine and a little conversation about how this unlikely project was born.
Then, guided by the artists, you’ll dive into the making process: crushing shells, mixing seaweed, and forming your own tile entirely from these natural materials. You’ll leave your creation to dry, ready for its final transformation in the next session.
Highlights:
Local oyster & wine tasting
Guided intro to sustainable tile design
Hands-on making: craft your own biomaterial tile
Session 2: Shape, Sand & Celebrate (6th Nov.)
In this session, we’ll bring your dried tile back to life. You’ll sand, shape, and finish it to your liking, creating a piece that’s uniquely yours: part art, part ocean, part Portugal.
We’ll wrap up with local bites and (of course) more wine — and you’ll get to see one of the studio’s exhibition pieces in action… when you wash your hands using their oyster-shell sink installation featured at Gulbenkian.
Highlights:
Tile finishing & detailing
Local food & wine celebration
An interactive look at a Gulbenkian-exhibited piece
