Destination Discovery 3 — Beyond Fado: Portugal Through the Sound of Cultural Exchange (Nov. 12)
What stories can music tell us about a country, its people and the cultures that have shaped it?
Portugal's musical identity goes far beyond Fado. It is a story of centuries of movement, migration, colonial histories and cultural exchange, with influences that have travelled across continents and found their way into the sounds of everyday life.
In this interactive Destination Discovery, we'll explore Portugal's cultural landscape through the lens of music, uncovering some of the lesser-known influences and stories behind its diverse musical traditions.
Starting with the familiar sounds of Fado, we'll journey into the connections between Portugal and the wider Lusophone world, exploring how migration, colonialism and the movement of people have shaped musical genres, identities and communities. From historical roots to contemporary sounds, we'll discover how different cultures have influenced one another and continue to shape Portugal's music scene today.
Led by DJ and music digger Mr Chong, this session brings history and cultural context to life through music itself. With his turntables and a selection of musical examples, he'll take us on a listening journey, sharing stories, sounds and personal insights along the way.
Beyond a simple presentation or listening session, families will be invited to share their own cultural backgrounds, musical influences and experiences, opening up a conversation about how music connects us across borders.
A chance to discover a different side of Portugal: one that is often less visible, but can be heard everywhere if you know how to listen.
Meeting Point: Family Lounge
Schedule: Thursday, November 12th from 10 AM - 11 AM
Minimum Participants: 6
Maximum Participants: N/A
** Whilst this is a free event, please ensure you sign yourselves up if attending!
