Hike to Agios Athanasios, Alithini & Pherecydes Cave: A Journey Through Nature, History & Myth

Discover the wilder, greener side of Syros on this guided walk that takes you from the ravine-hidden church of Agios Athanasios to the peaceful village of Alithini and the legendary cave of Pherecydes—ancient philosopher and teacher of Pythagoras. Along the way, take in breathtaking island views, uncover mythic history, and explore Syros’ serene backcountry.

What to Expect:

Agios Athanasios Church – Begin your hike with a visit to the beautiful stone church of St. Athanasios, first built in 1631 and rebuilt many times after destruction. Nestled in a lush ravine at the back of Ano Syros and surrounded by plane trees and spring water, it offers a quiet moment to appreciate the island’s spiritual and architectural heritage.

Scenic Hike Through the Hills – Walk along ancient footpaths that once connected Ano Syros to remote hillside villages. Discover hidden chapels and panoramic viewpoints overlooking Ermoupoli, Didimi Islet, and even distant Cycladic islands like Tinos, Mykonos, and Naxos when the sky is clear.

Village of Alithini – Arrive at this traditional settlement, perched 190 meters above sea level, where just 80 residents live year-round. It’s the perfect vantage point for soaking in the island’s rugged beauty and peaceful rhythm of life.

Pherecydes Cave & Agios Georgios Chapel – End your journey at the mythic winter cave of Pherecydes of Syros, one of Greece’s earliest philosophers. Learn how his mystical writings helped shape early Greek thought and inspired generations to come, including Pythagoras.
